As you may have heard, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PC will stop working; it just means you'll need to manage your device's security and performance independently.
If you tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues, don't worry—there are still several options available to you:
- Ignore the Deadline: Although not recommended, you can choose to continue using Windows 10 without support. After support ends, you won't receive security updates, leaving your device vulnerable to cyber threats. Additionally, the lack of technical support and non-security updates could affect your computer's efficiency.
- Switch to Linux: If you're technically inclined and not ready to part with your current PC, consider replacing Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Be prepared for potential challenges during the transition, as moving to a new OS can be complex.
- Upgrade "Incompatible" PCs via a Technical Loophole: If your PC failed the compatibility check for Windows 11, you might still upgrade it using a workaround. By making a minor registry edit and ensuring your PC uses Secure Boot with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), you can proceed with the upgrade. However, note that this may result in limited support and updates from Microsoft.
- Pay for Extended Security Updates (ESUs): Microsoft will offer paid ESUs for Windows 10, available for up to three years. These updates come with a subscription fee, which increases each year—$61 for the first year, $122 for the second, and $244 for the third. Educators receive a discount, starting at $1 for the first year. Keep in mind that these updates are cumulative, and technical support is not included.
- Purchase a New PC: If your current device is outdated, consider investing in a new PC compatible with Windows 11. Newer computers typically offer faster performance, enhanced security, and improved productivity. Remember to back up your data regularly to prevent data loss during the transition.
